The works in Stacked are assemblies of stoneware that reference the characteristics of Canada’s Gulf Islands intertidal zone topography. Comprised of a single form repeated, each piece is hand-formed and glazed to evoke sandstone’s fragility, texture, and colour palette. Presented vertically, the layering reflects the sedimentary nature of the stone, showcasing its variations and ruggedness. Perched on cedar, the seemingly precarious form highlights the shoreline’s vulnerability to climate change: as salinity levels increase, the erosion of sandstone accelerates, resulting in the loss of land and habitat.
